Both come from Google's Nano Banana line, but they suit different work. Nano Banana 2 is the quick one: up to four images per call and very wide or tall formats. Nano Banana Pro made the stronger single image in my scoring. One thing surprises people: Nano Banana 2 is only cheaper at 1K, and at 2K and 4K Pro costs less.

When to pick Nano Banana 2

  • You want several ad or thumbnail versions in one request.
  • You need an 8:1 banner or a 1:8 vertical strip.
  • You iterate fast at 1K and the wait matters.
  • The image has short text: it passed my typography test with a sign, poster and pangram, no letter wrong.

When to pick Nano Banana Pro

  • One image has to be as good as it gets, like a cover.
  • You deliver at 2K or 4K, where Pro is the cheaper model.
  • The scene depends on understanding the subject: Pro drew Polish pierogi correctly, while Nano Banana 2 made them look like gyoza.
  • You edit an image and every detail needs to survive.

Differences you will notice

  • Price. At 1K Nano Banana 2 (from $0.07 per image) is about 6% below Nano Banana Pro (from $0.07 per image). At 2K Nano Banana 2 costs about 24% more and at 4K about 1.7x Pro. Pro bills 1K and 2K the same and 4K only a bit more, so 2K is a sensible default there.
  • Quality. On the same five prompts Pro scored 9.0/10 and Nano Banana 2 8.6/10. Nano Banana 2 also tends to add things you did not ask for, such as festival dates.
  • Speed. In my runs Nano Banana 2 averaged 12.2 s per image and Pro 18.6 s. Google quotes 10-30 s for a typical 1K Nano Banana 2 image.
  • Formats. Nano Banana 2 has 14 ratios including 1:4, 4:1, 1:8 and 8:1, and tiers 0.5K to 4K. Pro has 10 ratios from 21:9 to 9:16 and 1K to 4K.
  • Shared. Up to 14 references, 32,000-character prompts, text-to-image and image-to-image in both.

How to decide

  • Many versions, odd formats, 1K speed: Nano Banana 2.
  • One hero image, or anything at 2K-4K: Nano Banana Pro.

With num_images in Nano Banana 2 you pay per image, so four versions cost four times the rate, and the 0.5K tier is billed like 1K. More examples are in GPT Image 2.5 vs Nano Banana Pro vs FLUX.2, and all tiers on /pricing.

Questions

Why is Pro cheaper at 4K if it is the stronger model?

That is simply how the rates are set: Nano Banana 2 rises steeply with resolution, while Pro stays nearly flat. Check the price on the Generate button before you send.

Can Nano Banana Pro return four images at once?

No, one per request. For four versions send four tasks, or use Nano Banana 2.

Which model invents fewer extra details?

Pro. Nano Banana 2 sometimes adds text or objects that were not in the prompt, so read its output carefully.
